Tibetan Prayer Flags. A gift pack of 5 rolls of 10 flags each roll, each flag being approximately 20cm (8inches) x 22cm (8.5inches). As these are handmade, the dimensions of each flag may vary slightly.
For centuries, Tibetan Buddhists have planted prayer flags outside their homes, places of worship and in the countryside.
Traditionally, they come in groups of five, the colours representing the five Buddha families and five elements and are arranged left to right or top to bottom in a specific order:
Blue – space
White - air
Red - fire
Green – water
Yellow – earth
The flags are wood-block printed with auspicious images and mantras to release prayers for kindness, peace, compassion and wisdom onto the world.
It is a sign of respect to keep prayer flags off the ground. Flags have unfinished edges, which is traditional, as some people believe that as the edges fray the threads bestow blessings on the ground where they fall. They are often burned when they are worn, to release the last prayers.
The best time to put up new prayer flags is in the mornings on sunny, windy days.
