Soapnuts are called ‘Rittha’ in Nepali and aren’t really nuts at all, but the dried shells of the soapberry that contain a natural soap called saponin that make mild, gentle suds and are a 100% natural alternative to chemical detergents.  The highest quality soapnut is Sapindus Mukorossi, growing primarily in Nepal and northern India. Our soapnuts come from the lower tarai forest of Nepal.

Just pop six to eight halves (3-4 whole shells) of these soapnuts in the small pouch provided and place in the washing machine.  The saponin in the shells is released when the shells contact the water.

The gentle suds will clean your clothes, keeping colours bright and clothes soft, eliminating the need for conditioner.  Please expect less suds than normal in the washing machine as the soapnuts contain no harsh chemicals that normally create foam; soapnuts are ideal for sensitive skin and can be used by those with eczema.  

The same six to eight soapnuts can be used up to four to six times, making them a great eco-friendly alternative to traditional washing powder.  Dry the soapnuts between washloads if possible.  The soapnuts appear softer, mushy and lighter in colour when exhausted and the finished soapnuts can then be composted.  

If you want to use soapnuts for washing by hand or for a gentle shampoo you can make up some liquid by boiling 8 nuts in 6 cups water for 20-30 minutes, straining and using the liquid.  It can be a matter of experimenting with the amount of soapnuts and water, depending on the softness of your water at home. You can re-boil the soap nuts till exhausted or use them in the washing machine.  You could then water your plants with the used liquid.
