A hand-loomed rustic mat made from stinging nettles gathered wild in the eastern hills of Nepal. Can be used as a table mat or a bath mat !!

Wild nettles are a very eco-friendly crop. Naturally organic, they need no artificial chemicals to grow, are watered by the rain, good for the soil and harvested sustainably (and carefully!) by farmers just before the monsoon.

The wild nettles are harvested and processed by hand before being hand drawn (by a method called tooth and spindle) into fine yarn - it takes 10 days' work to make one kilogramme of nettle yarn. Tooth and spindle method was used in Europe during the middle ages. The hand-drawn yarn for this product is bought direct from the people in the hills of Nepal.

The nettle is woven into mats on hand looms. (The finished product is naturally resistant to mould and fungus.) The mats are then walked to the nearest road to go on to Kathmandu, where they are bought for a fair price. As with all hemp and nettle goods, this product will biodegrade after its lifespan is over - but these beautiful mats are so hardwearing you won't have to think about that anytime soon!
