Welcome to Our Backpack Page.
What you see here are not the ordinary backpacks widely available in the market. Our backpacks (and most of our bags) are made from specially sourced one hundred percent Wild Nepali Hemp that grows in the mountain villages of Nepal.
The hemp yarn is hand-drawn using the 'tooth and spindle' method, which means that the fibre is separated using the teeth and then wound on a hand-held spindle. This is a very time consuming process and is done when it is snowing or when there is some free time work around the homestead and in the fields. This yarn is then woven into textile on a backstrap loom, and so is only about 14 to 18 inches wide - depending of course on the size of the back.
Once woven, the textile is then carried out of the hills to a road, before travelling to our workshop where it is cut, dyed, printed and stiched into our wonderful backpacks.
Our unique backpacks are very durable. The price of course still does not reflect the amount of time and love that has gone into making this beautiful woven fabric. We are pricing our backpacks competitively so that you can enjoy a truely wonderful product and we can give more work back to the people who make the yarn and the fabric, preserving this amazing art that is still alive in the mountains of Nepal.
